The Federal Government of Nigeria in late 1999 issued new guidelines for the development of proven underdeveloped field in the country. This made it imperative for the Government to recover abandoned and/or under-exploited field from the major operators and production rights re-allocated.
Sequel to that directive the Government in 2001 offered twenty-four (24) marginal fields to some Nigerian oil companies. Midwestern Oil & Gas Co Plc was awarded the Umusadege Field located in OML 56 block formerly operated by Elf Petroleum.
