The Ghana Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) was formed in 1986 to take responsibility for regulation of the civil air transport industry in Ghana, provision of air navigation services and the management of airports in the country. The Authority was tasked to provide, operate and maintain airfields and related facilities for aviation in Ghana. It was also to license aircraft and their personnel operating within its jurisdiction, coordinate activities of the various airlines serving Ghana and advise Government on civil aviation matters, among other functions.
